Post-breakup loneliness
The quiet after someone leaves, and what it does to the days.
- Why can't I move on?Because in your 40s a breakup rarely takes just a person. It takes the friends, the routines, sometimes the home, and you're grieving all of it at once. Moving on is usually less about forgetting them and more about rebuilding a life that holds you up on its own.
- Should I end things with someone I've been dating?Only you can answer that, but you can find out what's actually driving the question: something about this person, a fear of empty weekends, or the discomfort of letting someone down. In your 40s, with a full life to protect, the useful test is whether this person adds to that life, not whether anything is technically wrong.
- Should I have stayed after the cheating?Second-guessing after you leave is common and doesn't prove you chose wrong. In your 40s, the more useful question is not whether it could have worked, but whether it was working, and what the doubt is really asking for now.
